Casting Table and Launder Design in Hot Top Casting Platforms

Cooling System Design in Hot Top Aluminum Billet Casting

In aluminum billet and extrusion billet production, the cooling system is a key part of a hot top casting platform. After molten aluminum enters the crystallizer, cooling water is required for the solidification process. Therefore, cooling-water distribution, water chamber design, and pressure balance between crystallizers are important technical considerations.

The hot top aluminum billet casting machine uses an integrated casting platform design, including crystallizers, a cooling-water distribution system, aluminum melt distribution components, billet guiding system, and related connection structures. The cooling system works together with the crystallizers to support continuous aluminum billet casting.

Cooling Water Distribution System

Water Tank and Water Chamber Design

The hot top casting platform includes a cooling water distribution system and water tank. The technical specification requires the water chamber to be reasonably designed so that cooling water can be distributed more uniformly to each crystallizer while avoiding water-pressure imbalance at the crystallizer inlets.

The water-frame structure is manufactured from welded steel plates. The upper and lower plates use 25 mm and 14 mm steel plates respectively. After welding, the structure undergoes stress-relief annealing, followed by hot-dip galvanizing and machining of crystallizer cover mounting holes.

For aluminum billet production, the water chamber provides cooling-water distribution while also maintaining compatibility with the crystallizer mounting structure.

Launder System and Molten Aluminum Transfer

Aluminum Melt Distribution Path

The cooling system works together with the molten aluminum distribution system. The upper section of the hot top casting platform includes launders, diversion channels, diversion disks, and casting pipes made from refractory materials.

According to the technical specification, this system is designed to distribute molten aluminum more evenly into the crystallizers while minimizing temperature loss during transfer. Vertical plates and pressure plates are arranged outside the launder, with insulation material placed between them to reduce temperature loss and position the launder system.

Therefore, in a hot top aluminum billet casting system, cooling-water distribution and molten aluminum flow should be considered together rather than as separate modules.

Crystallizer Cooling and Structural Integration

Two-Piece Water-Curtain Crystallizer

The equipment uses a two-piece water-curtain crystallizer made from aluminum alloy. The crystallizer blank is forged from 6061 aluminum rod, followed by rough machining, CNC drilling and milling, and precision machining.

The crystallizer is connected to the casting platform with four bolts and includes six positioning guide surfaces at the bottom of the inner cavity for billet-head positioning. This structure integrates crystallizer installation, positioning, and cooling requirements into one system.

Technical Selection Points for Aluminum Billet Production

For manufacturers evaluating a hot top aluminum billet casting machine, key cooling-related considerations include:

  • Cooling-water distribution system structure;
  • Water chamber design;
  • Water-pressure balance requirements at crystallizer inlets;
  • Launder insulation configuration;
  • Crystallizer material and positioning structure.

The technical document does not provide specific cooling-water flow rates, pressure values, casting speeds, or temperature-change data. Therefore, product descriptions should remain based on documented structures, materials, and manufacturing processes rather than unsupported performance percentages or operating claims.
