Automation Challenges in Aluminum Bar Processing: PLC-Controlled Line Integrates Feeding, Sawing, Sizing and Discharge

2026-09-22

Product Overview

The PLC-controlled aluminum billet cutting machine integrates feeding, sawing, sizing, discharge, and material collection within one production line. It is designed for aluminum alloy long bars and combines mechanical equipment with a PLC and HMI control system.

The line includes a buffering and alignment table, multi-bar loading and unloading machine, feeding conveyor, long-bar gang saw, discharge mechanism, sizing equipment, chip collection system, hydraulic system, and electrical control system.

PLC and HMI Control

Centralized Process Control

The electrical control system uses a Mitsubishi PLC and a 7-inch Weinview HMI. The equipment supports both manual and automatic operation. Fault alarm and automatic interlock protection functions are also included in the documented control configuration.

The PLC control structure coordinates the different stages of the production line. Long aluminum bars are first aligned and loaded, then transferred through the feeding conveyor to the sawing unit. After head cutting, the bars move to the sizing and discharge sections.

Automatic and Manual Operation

The equipment provides two operating modes: manual and automatic. This allows the control system to cover different equipment operating requirements while keeping the major production stages within the same electrical control framework.

Feeding, Sawing and Sizing Parameters

Aluminum Bar Feeding

The machine is specified for aluminum alloy bars with diameters from Ø80 to Ø254 mm. The maximum pre-cut bar length is 13,000 mm, and the roller conveyor speed is 25 m/min with adjustable speed.

Main Sawing Unit

The main saw uses a horizontal circular saw configuration. Its main sawing motor is rated at 45 kW, while the total line power is 90 kW. The specified saw blade is Ø900 mm, with a blade speed of 1400 rpm.

The equipment also specifies a sawing quantity of five Ø120 mm bars at one time, with a continuous sawing condition of ≤60 seconds per five bars for Ø120 * 6000 mm bars.

Sizing and Discharge

After sawing, the bars enter the sizing section. The documented sizing range is 4500–6000 mm, with a stated length accuracy of ±2 mm. Finished bars are then transferred through the discharge section to the storage platform.

Material Collection

Cut heads and tails are collected in a dedicated bin, while aluminum chips are transferred by a fan into a collection container. This material-handling arrangement is incorporated into the overall production line.
