Product Description
Blowhole Control Challenges in Aluminum Billet Line Retrofit

When aluminum mills upgrade old production lines, original launder systems lack in-line melt purification units. After refining in holding furnaces, molten aluminum continuously reabsorbs hydrogen while flowing through open launders. Dissolved hydrogen precipitates during solidification and forms internal blowholes, resulting in failed NDT inspection of aluminum billets.

Retrofit projects normally face space and budget constraints. Full replacement of the whole casting system is impractical, calling for compact retrofittable degassing equipment that can be installed without prolonged production shutdown.

Refining Principle of the In-line Degassing Unit
Twin-Rotor Micro-Bubble Refining System

The unit is retrofitted to the launder section between the holding furnace and the mold. Twin rotors shear inert gas into abundant micro bubbles evenly distributed in molten aluminum. Hydrogen atoms diffuse into the bubbles and escape via flotation; suspended oxide inclusions are captured by the bubbles to achieve simultaneous degassing and slag removal.

Its modular design supports retrofitting for old lines with phased installation and commissioning.

Project Suitability & Maintenance Notes

The unit fits retrofit projects for existing continuous aluminum round billet and slab billet casting lines, as well as new medium and small melting-casting lines. The insulated refractory cabinet reduces melt temperature loss, and the modular construction shortens on-site installation time.

Graphite rotors are consumables. Maintenance teams can define replacement intervals based on production shifts and impurity levels of the molten aluminum. The gas supply control system adjusts gas parameters according to melt flow rate to maintain consistent purification performance.

Summary

This in-line degassing unit delivers a lightweight melt purification solution for aluminum billet casting line retrofits. It treats molten aluminum inside launders to suppress blowhole formation and improve billet melt quality within limited installation space.
