Water cooling in semi continuous casting: control of casting speed, cooling intensity, and surface segregation zone-6

2026-10-16

Cutting edge technology: from "passive cooling" to "active regulation"

The traditional semi continuous casting water cooling is "passive" - the cooling water parameters are fixed, and the quality is guaranteed by process discipline. And modern technology is evolving towards "active regulation":

Airslip/Lubrislip: by forming an oil air mixture film on the inner wall of the crystallizer, independent control of lubrication and heat transfer is achieved, fundamentally suppressing the formation of air gaps and basically eliminating surface segregation nodules.

Electromagnetic Casting (EMC): Using electromagnetic induction to generate electromagnetic pressure to support the melt, completely eliminating the contact between the crystallizer walls, and the surface quality of the ingot is close to "zero defects".

Combination of external field casting: The combination of strong shear of the melt and electromagnetic field makes the liquid cavity shallower, feather crystals disappear, and central negative segregation weakens.

Ultrasonic semi continuous casting: Introducing ultrasonic vibration into the melt, combined with the matching principle of "smaller heat transfer coefficient in the primary cooling zone, larger heat transfer coefficient in the secondary cooling zone, and lower casting speed", significantly refines the grain size.

The development direction of these technologies is highly consistent: making cooling more uniform, making liquid cavities shallower, and making surface segregation zones thinner.
