Introduction to the mechanism and management of other typical defects

2026-10-06
  • Pores (hydrogen induced defects)

Mechanism: Hydrogen in aluminum liquid mainly comes from water vapor decomposition. The solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum (0.034 mL/100g) is much lower than that in liquid aluminum (0.65 mL/100g). Hydrogen precipitates during solidification, forming pores.

Management: Drying of raw materials; Argon degassing (reducing hydrogen to below 0.12 mL/100g); Control the humidity of the furnace gas.

  • Hot Cracks

Mechanism: At the end of solidification, columnar crystals grow and bridge the gap, and the intergranular liquid film is pulled apart by solidification shrinkage tensile stress.

Management: Control alloy composition (Mn, Ti crack prevention); Reduce casting speed; Improve the intensity of cooling water and achieve uniform cooling.

  • Coarse grain size

Mechanism: Insufficient nucleation sites. Failure of Al-Ti-B refining agent, improper Ti/B ratio, or high Zr content leading to poisoning.

Management: Use high-quality Al-Ti-B or Al-Ti-C (including Al-Ti-C for Zr alloys); Control the amount of refining agent added; Prevent the refining agent from being oxidized and burned.
